Summer skincare routines, written by a clinical aromatherapist
Summer brings sunshine, warmth, and outdoor adventures—but it also brings unique challenges for your skin. The season demands a shift in your skincare approach, and understanding how to adapt your routine can help you maintain a healthy, glowing complexion all summer long.
Why Your Skin Changes in Summer
Heat and humidity increase sebum production, which can lead to a shinier complexion and more frequent breakouts. UV exposure intensifies, putting your skin at risk of sun damage and premature ageing. Chlorine from swimming pools and salt water from the sea can also strip your skin of its natural oils and cause irritation. Recognising these seasonal shifts is the first step to adjusting your routine effectively.
Lighten Your Moisturiser
Your winter moisturiser may feel heavy and suffocating in summer heat. Switch to a lightweight, oil-free formula or a gel-based moisturiser that hydrates without clogging pores. If your skin tends toward oiliness, you might even skip the moisturiser entirely and rely on a hydrating toner or essence instead. The goal is to maintain hydration without adding excess weight to your skin.
Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable
This is the most important step in any summer skincare routine. UV rays are strongest during summer months, and sun damage accumulates over time. Use a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 daily, and reapply every two hours if you're spending time outdoors. Consider a lightweight, water-resistant formula that won't feel greasy in the heat.
Cleanse More Frequently
Sweat, sunscreen, and environmental pollutants accumulate on your skin throughout the day. A gentle cleanser used twice daily helps remove these impurities without stripping your skin. If you're particularly active or spend time in the pool or sea, rinse your face with fresh water as soon as possible to remove chlorine and salt.
Incorporate Exfoliation Wisely
Light exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores, but be cautious—over-exfoliating combined with sun exposure can damage your skin barrier. Limit exfoliation to once or twice per week, and always follow with sunscreen. Chemical exfoliants like AHAs and BHAs are often gentler than physical scrubs during summer months.
Stay Hydrated From Within
Summer heat causes your body to lose water more quickly. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day supports your skin's hydration from the inside out. This simple step can improve your complexion's clarity and resilience during the warmer months.
Protect Your Skin After Sun Exposure
If you've spent time in the sun, give your skin some extra care in the evening. A soothing serum or hydrating mask can help calm any irritation and replenish moisture. Aloe vera and niacinamide are particularly beneficial ingredients for post-sun skincare.
Summer skincare doesn't need to be complicated—it's about making thoughtful adjustments to protect and nourish your skin during the season's unique demands. With these simple changes, you can enjoy the sunshine whilst keeping your complexion healthy and radiant.
